Dhea is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands just above the kidneys. It is the most abundant hormone in the human body. Without going into great detail, DHEA is the sole precursor for productuon of all steroid and sex hormones in the body. It converts into male hormones, known as androgens, or female hormones known as estrogens. It is deficient in almost everyone over the age of 40. Anyone under the age of 40 should NOT take DHEA!
As with Melatonin DHEA levels decrease with age. Supplements have been shown to increase energy levels, enhance memory
and cognitive functions, reduce the ill effects of stress, improve immunity to
diseases (including cancer), decrease body fat, enhance sex drive, and mood enhancement and improve mental clarity. Declining levels of DHEA are shown to be implicated in Alzheimers disease, diabetes, heart disease and lupus.
In animal studies, DHEA was shown to provide protection against
the effects of stress on the immune system. In recent human
studies, DHEA has been shown to significantly activate immune function.
Dosage: I take 25mg. of DHEA every other day but, research has indicated 25 mgs. to 50 mgs. daily is safe. Dhea should be taken in the morning so it can get into the bloodstream, as levels decline fairly rapidly during the day due to the fact that it is quickly cleared by the kidneys.
**Note from the author: I am not a doctor, a medical researcher or an expert in the field of anti-aging. The information on this website is a result of my own personal experiences. Ten years ago after extensive research I began a regimented anti-aging program of my own design with very positive results and no adverse affects. I am healthy, disease free, (not so much as a sniffle in 8 yrs) energetic, full of vitality, in good physical condition and (many would say) look younger than my age would suggest. This website is a result of my passion for the subject. Not all of the products discussed here are for everyone. Before launching such a program for yourself please consult your doctor.
