Melatonin is produced by the Pineal Gland which is located in the brain right behind the eyes. It is light sensitive so, during daylight hours the gland shuts down completely and at night, when it is dark, it begins to produce melatonin which causes us to be sleepy. When we go int REM sleep it kicks in and starts to do its job. When I get up in the morning the first thing I do is go to a window and look outside at the light which shuts the pineal gland down and prevents me from feeling that early morning drowsiness.
The pineal gland acts like a General in the Army. It produces melatonin and directs it to areas that require attention, where there are germs, viruses, free radicals or any other organisms that may cause problems in the body. The melatonin then goes on a search and destroy mission and destroys the "enemy" thus shoring up the immune system. Actually, it doesn't really destroy the free radicals it does something quite unusual! Here is how melatonin works!
People don't die of old age, they die of diseases due to a weak immune system.
Dosage: First, melatonin should be taken a half hour before bedtime daily. At age 45 you should take 1 mg. and increase dosage by 1 mg. every ten years. By age 75 your pineal gland will probably be permanently shut down and 4 to 5 mgs. per day is recommended.
Melatonin, without question, improves our quality of life as we age. Melatonin is, in my opinion, one of, if not the most important hormones in the body in the anti-aging war!
