Valerian Side Effects

Studies have shown Valerian is a safe herb when taken in recommended dosages (which range from 300 mg to 600 mg per day). Some possible side effects from high dosages include: nausea, headaches, dizziness, grogginess, and heart palpitations.

It is also argued that very high dosages may impair the liver or central nervous system function.

Pregnant or nursing women, as always, should refrain from using Valerian, and anyone with an existing medical condition should consult their physician before beginning supplementation of any kind. It is advisable to not take valerian for more than two week stretches at a time.

Adverse events attributable to Valerian have been reported for clinical study participants. Headaches, dizziness, pruritus, and gastrointestinal disturbances are the most common effects reported in clinical trials but similar effects were also reported for the placebo.

In one study an increase in sleepiness was noted the morning after 900 mg of valerian was taken. Investigators from another study concluded that 600 mg of valerian did not have a clinically significant effect on reaction time, alertness, and concentration the morning after ingestion.

The bottom line is, Valerian is very safe with virtually no side effects when taken in recommended doses. Safer by far than prescription drugs such as Valium and Halcion and a whole bunch cheaper!

Life on the planet Earth can be expensive but it does come with free trips around the sun!

These are the soul's changes. I don't believe in aging. I believe in forever altering one's aspect to the sun. Hence my optimism.

**Note from the author:
I am not a doctor, a medical researcher or an expert in the field of anti-aging. The information on this website is a result of my own personal experiences. In 1997, at the age of 59, and after extensive research I began a regimented anti-aging program of my own design with very positive results and no adverse affects. I am currently healthy, disease free, (not so much as a sniffle) energetic, full of vitality, in good physical condition and some say I look younger than my age would suggest. This website is a result of my passion for the subject. Not all of the products discussed here are for everyone. Before launching such a program for yourself please consult your doctor.
